Traditionally, holiday lights are turned on at the beginning of the Night Shopping event, which takes place this year on Thursday, 23 November 2023, at 6 p.m., and create a festive, magical atmosphere until 6 January 2024.
Energy efficiency and festivity come together.
Saving energy has been an important issue for quite a while. The Zurich City Association deals with this topic in depth and serves as a role model. The most famous Christmas lighting installation is “Lucy” above the Bahnhofstrasse. Lucy is already the third light installation that has been used on this street. After it was introduced, the corresponding light installations in the adjacent districts were regularly retrofitted with the latest technology.
In the age of LED lights, we are leading the way in terms of energy efficiency. During the winter of 2022/23, the time in which all of the Christmas lights were turned on was also reduced by three and a half hours per day due to the impending energy crisis.
A look back in history shows that saving energy with the Christmas lights was a major topic of discussion even as far back as the mid-1970s.
The City Association is on the ball when it comes to sustainability. It is important to us that creating a festive atmosphere should never be at the expense of the environment.
